Ashley Judd shared that she told her mother Naomi Judd “all is forgiven” in the final moments before Naomi died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in 2022 at the age of 76.
During her appearance on Anderson Cooper’s podcast “All There Is,” Judd gives a detailed account of discovering her mother after she shot herself. In Naomi Judd’s final moments, Ashley said she held her mother.
“I’m so glad I was there … the first thing out of my mouth was, ‘Mama, I see how much you’ve been suffering and it is OK,” Judd told Cooper she said to her mother. “It is OK to go. I am here. It is OK to let go. I love you. Go see your daddy. Go see Papa Judd. Go be with your people,'”

“And she heard you?” Cooper asked Judd.
“Oh, she heard me,” Judd answered. “And I just got into bed and held her and talked to her and said, ‘Let it all go, be free, all is forgiven long ago. All is forgiven long ago. Leave it all here, take nothing with you just be free.'”

“It’s an extraordinary blessing that you were able to do that,” Cooper told her.
Country music icon Naomi Judd died on April 30, 2022, just days before she was due to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame along with her daughter, Wynonna, with whom she made up the chart-topping band, The Judds.
Ashley said back in 2022 in an interview with “Good Morning America” that her mother suffered from mental illness, and in her final days, “her brain hurt, it physically hurt,” she said.
“My mother’s death was traumatic and unexpected because it was death by suicide,” she told Cooper. “My grief was in lockstep with trauma because of the manner of her death.”
Judd said she’d been dealing with the trauma by doing eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy. Looking back on it now with Cooper, Judd is thankful that she was there for her mother’s final moments.
“I think we all deserve to be remembered for how we lived. And how we died is simply part of a bigger story,” she said.
