Maria Fitzsimons and her friend, Jill Slattery, obtained tickets for The Price is Right in 2013.

They showed up early, dressed to impress, and stood in line, which wrapped around the building, until they got inside.

Maria revealed that everyone who shows up for the taping is interviewed beforehand.

“They interview every person. The producers go down the line and look you right in the eye and ask you questions,” she said.

The interview process “took a long time” because they split everyone into small groups.

“So, it was a full 45 minutes to an hour, probably closer to an hour, before we even made it to the front and before we made it into the building,” Maria shared.

“There was a lot of waiting around and not really knowing exactly what was going on. We finally got to the front to be interviewed, but there was a lot of waiting around.”

Maria also shared that nothing is random on the game show.

Producers interview every person so they know who they are going to pick to “come on down!”

“Nothing is by chance. Everyone is interviewed and they pick from those interviews. They make it seem random, but it’s not. And I think that’s why the show has done so well,” she said.

Even though Maria and her friend did not get picked, they were still seen on TV in the audience.

BEHIND THE SCENES SECRETS

Maria also revealed that a beloved part of the set is the green screen.

After everyone is interviewed, the groups that the people came with are allowed to take pictures in front of the wheel.

However, they aren’t allowed on stage if they aren’t picked.

The Price is Right hosts

The Price is Right first came on TV in 1972. Fans fell in love with the game show so much that it has been on for over 50 years. Throughout that time, the show has had a few different hosts. Find out who they are below.

Bob Barker – 1972 to June 2007 (also became executive producer in 1988)

Drew Carey – October 2007 to present

Dennis James – filled in for Bob in 1974 when he missed four episodes, also hosted the nighttime version

Craig Ferguson – 2014 April Fools Day Special

While being interviewed, there is a green screen that potential contestants can stand in front of.

Everyone is allowed to take a picture in front of it and pose how they want to.

“When you’re in line, you snap a picture and it actually looks like you’re in front of the wheel,” Maria said.

“You can buy the photo at the end of the taping. They don’t allow people to go on stage if you’re not picked.”

WE’LL BE RIGHT BACK

When the show would stop for a commercial break, Maria revealed that host Drew Carey, who was new to the job at the time, would stop and talk with the audience.

“He was engaging with people in a genuine way,” she said.

“I remember him engaging with the audience quite a bit, just coming really close to the edge of the stage during commercials and asking people where they’re from, wanting to know about them like how they’re doing today.

“And just being really himself and then once the camera started rolling again, he turned into his like on-air persona. There was a distinction there for sure.”

The audience wasn’t able to ask Drew questions, but they could answer if he asked something about them.
