Ryan Seacrest Accused of Making a Million-Dollar Mistake on Wheel of Fortune That Pat Sajak Would *Never* Do

Ryan Seacrest started his new job hosting Wheel of Fortune this week, but how is he doing so far? Some fans of the long-running gameshow think Seacrest fumbled one moment and is to blame for a contestant losing $1 million.
On the September 10 episode, Airica Boyle from Taylor, Michigan, Promise Anderson from Chicago, Illinois, and Andrew Polec from South Dakota competed on the show.
In the first round, Boyle picked up the $1 million wedge. “It could be very interesting later in the show,” Seacrest noted, explaining that she could trade in the wedge in the Bonus Round for a chance to win $1 million.
In the next round, Boyle lost the million-dollar wedge. Some fans are blaming Seacrest, believing he didn’t explain the gameplay well enough. She landed on a $10,000 mystery wedge and could reveal what was under it or leave it. She picked the letter ‘T’ and Seacrest explained, “So Airica, those two Ts are worth $2,000. You could keep those or you could risk them by seeing what’s on the other side. It could be a bankrupt or it could be $10,000.”
Some viewers think he left out a key piece of information, however — if she revealed “bankrupt,” that would wipe out everything and require her to give back the $1 million wedge.
“I’m gonna risk it,” Boyle said. She then revealed the bankrupt wedge. Seacrest told her, “Gotta take the mystery and the million-dollar wedge. Sorry about that.” She responded, “It’s okay.”
One viewer remarked on X, “Pat would’ve explained that if she took the risk she would’ve lost the million dollar wedge.”

Another pointed out that it’s likely the woman knew the rules. “Contestants are briefed with complete rules before taping begins, and since we all know how it works, they’re edited out in post to make room for more gameplay,” they commented on X.
This hiccup seemed to be the biggest complaint that most people had about Seacrest. After just two days of new Seacrest-hosted Wheel of Fortune episodes, many fans of the gameshow say he’s exceeded their expectations.

“I thought Ryan did just about as well as anyone possibly could have taking over such a huge role,” one person shared in a Reddit discussion. Another added, “I’m not a big Seacrest fan but I have to admit he’s a total pro. He’s an experienced broadcaster and it shows.”
Some fans said they missed Pat Sajak. “It felt weird with Seacrest not holding cards like Pat,” one fan said, adding, “The set looks like something from one of the European versions. It’ll grow on me eventually. I liked the flow of the game.”
Another person commented, “Seacrest is OK, though it will be awhile before I stop missing Sajak’s style of patter with the contestants.”
Most Wheel fans left comments praising Ryan, but many said they don’t like the new Wheel of Fortune set. “I think Ryan is doing OK. Obviously it will take some time for him to settle in,” one fan wrote. “The big problem is the set is way too busy.”
Another agreed, writing, “Ryan is ok but I hate the new set. Also hate them showing the contestants at the bottom during the toss ups. It’s a distraction. I just want to see the puzzle!”
