Britain’s Got Talent has been hit by a barrage of Ofcom complaints, as viewers fumed that a Titanic-themed act was ‘distasteful’.

Drag performer Chantaaaal’s audition aired on Saturday night’s show and saw them dress up as the Titanic to sing a rendition of Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On.

The performance saw the audience and judges Alesha DixonAmanda Holden left in fits of laughter, as Chantaaaal unveiled their costume to look like the infamous iceberg, while their headpiece even puffed out fake smoke.

They then had all the lights on their costume go out as they pretended to be freezing cold, getting hosts Ant and Dec to throw them a life jacket in the hilariously detailed routine.

The judges were full of praise for the singer, with Simon Cowell saying: ‘No one has ever actually sang, and been the boat, and the iceberg, and the ocean at the same time, that’s a first.’

But there were some watching at home who were outraged by the reference to the sinking of the Titanic, calling it ‘disrespectful’ to those who died.

The Titanic sank in 1912 after colliding with an iceberg, resulting in the death of more than 1,500 people and was made into the hit film with Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.

According to Ofcom, the ITV show on Saturday caused 78 complaints in total, with the majority ‘objecting to a routine featuring a Titanic parody’.

Several took to social media to continue to vent their anger, saying mocking the Titanic disaster was akin to mocking the attack on the Twin Towers, the Manchester Arena terrorist attack, Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 and even the Holocaust.

They raged: ‘Absolutely shocking that someone could make fun of what happened to the Titanic, thousands died young family children and babies, all walks of life.’

‘I actually don’t know how that Titanic act made it to television…like people edited and approved of this ?!!! It’s disgusting, people DIED!! It’s a tragedy it is NOT funny. Really really distasteful…’

‘Why do people think it is funny to mock tragedies like Titanic just because it was over a hundred years ago? Over a thousand people died in that disaster. It is no laughing matter.’

‘I’ll be honest, that Titanic Drag Act was SUPER distasteful and not funny in the slightest; I feel like this is lowkey disrespectful of the actual terrifying tragedy of the Titanic…’

‘Not being a killjoy, but why do people find laughing at the Titanic tragedy a joke? So many people died. You wouldn’t laugh at an act portraying MH370?’

‘are people forgetting the titanic was real and people died or do i need to touch grass; Let’s all laugh at the titanic sinking and all those thousand of men women and children that died, hilarious’.

‘I’m finding the drag queen mocking the Titanic to be in quite bad taste actually not funny at all, people died in that disaster; The Titanic act was a bit disrespectful wasn’t it? What’s next a plane crash?’

‘Right I understand bgt is all for fun, but laughing at the titanic? Is that funny or is that very disrespectful to what happened to all them people? I might be deeping it but you can’t tell me it’s okay to laugh at that’.

‘More than 1500 folk lost their lives in the sinking of RMS Titanic. It was a human catastrophe, not a comedy. Just saying…; Can’t think of another tragedy people would find acceptable to take the piss out of. Distasteful in my opinion.’

‘Very bad taste @BGT taking the mick out of 1000’s of people dying on the titanic? What he going to do next? The holocaust ?

‘Not sure if I’m just getting grumpy in my old age but the guy on Britain’s got talent doing a Titanic themed drag act – what’s the next act; another disaster where 100s died? Am I the only one that thought it was a bit poor taste’.

But other people took to Twitter to praise Chantaaaal as ‘brilliant’, while hitting back at those offended as they pointed out the disaster had occurred 112 years ago.
