Drew Carey shares Price Is Right contract status and ‘giving it up’ with show

Drew Carey has shared some insight about his status as the host of The Price is Right.

Drew Carey is now the reigning champ when it comes to being the longest-serving host of a game show that is currently airing, but even he admits that his contract status isn’t concrete when it comes to his job.

Following Pat Sajak’s official goodbye after 41 years as the host of Wheel of Fortune, Carey assumed the title as the longest running host having served as the face of The Price is Right for 18 years.

During his time as host he has not only been slammed for fans for annoying habits, he has also seen historic moments that rendered him speechless.

However, despite his long run, Carey admitted in a recent interview that he while he would like to stick with the show for the rest of his life, his fate will be determined by CBS.

While he isn’t up for a contract negotiation at any point soon, he also knows the network could replace him at any point.

“The longest I’d been on TV was The Drew Carey Show, nine years. Once I hit 10 years here, I was like, ‘Wow, that’s the longest I’ve ever had a job in my life,” he told TV Insider. “It’s such just a great part of my day, my year, my life. I can’t imagine giving it up.”

“I don’t like CBS to know that but it’s going to be a few years ‘til my next contract negotiation,” he added. “So maybe forget I said this. I can quit anytime I want!”

He also admitted that while he may now hold the honorary title as longest-running host of a game show currently on air, he knows he has quite a way to go to catch up to legends, so he tries not to think about it.

“I just show up and punch the clock and hope I have a job every day,” he admitted. “I don’t think in terms of I’m the longest one.”

However, he did admit that his goal is to “keep going until I die.”

Carey took over hosting the show in 2007, after previous host Bob Barker opted to retire after 35 years.

Other game show hosts with lengthy hosting records were Sajak, who hosted Wheel of Fortune for 41 years before his retirement, and Alex Trebek, who hosted Jeopardy for 37 seasons before his death from pancreatic cancer in 2020.

Barker went on to live until the age of 99, passing away in August 2023.
