Fans upset after Backstreet Boys perform for 30 minutes
Backstreet Boys fans feel they were misled about how long the group would play in Cedar Park
It’s on the bucket lists of some women and men to see the Backstreet Boys in concert.
On Sunday night, thousands of fans checked that off of their lists after the boy band sang and danced at the H-E-B Center in Cedar Park.
The band performed as part of Mix 94.7’s “Merry Mix 2018: Featuring the Backstreet Boys.”
They took the stage after a nearly three-hour wait following performances from Nina Nesbitt, Marc Roberge from O.A.R. and Michael Franti.
“They finally came on. We were so excited. We were jumping up and down, acting like schoolgirls again,” Amanda Jackson said. “Then, 25 minutes later-ish, they were gone,”
Many fans left the concert upset.
“I wish that they would’ve been more transparent about what the actual show was going to be. I wish it was more of like, ‘Hey, we are going to have Backstreet Boys, but they’re not going to perform for an hour or whatever it is,'” Jackson said.
Dozens of people, like Jackson, left angry comments on the concert’s Facebook event page, wishing Mix 94.7 had told fans prior to the concert how long each band was going to play.
But not everyone left the concert in a sour mood — like Paul Secrest and his nine-year-old daughter, Lexie.
“I read between the lines it was going to be a featured performance. And I got that,” Secrest said.
The two of them had a chance to take a photo with the group.
“I walked away going, ‘Awesome. I got to watch Backstreet Boys in concert, and I got to hear a new song,'” he said.
But he understands why some people are upset.
“I think moving forward, if a big name is coming in, just say, ‘Hey, they’re doing a special performance or a smaller set,'” Secrest said.
Jackson doesn’t necessarily want her money back or an apology. She just wants acknowledgement from the radio station.
“[Backstreet Boys] still have it. It was an awesome experience. I just wish that I wouldn’t have paid so much money as I did for what I did,” she said.
KVUE reached out to Mix 94.7 several times on Monday, but got no response.
On Facebook, the radio station provided the following comment to angry fans:
“Thank you for your input and feedback. We appreciate everyone who attended the 3 ½ hour show including Nina Nesbitt, Marc Roberge from O.A.R, Michael Franti and the Backstreet Boys. We hope you have a wonderful holiday season.”
