Jeopardy! bosses reveal new details on Pop Culture spinoff and warn it’s ‘going to be hard’

AS Pop Culture Jeopardy! creeps closer, the network is revealing more about the spinoff, and it won’t be a cakewalk.

The game show, which was announced in May, will air exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.

But, now the producers of Jeopardy! have revealed more about the upcoming show.

On the July 15 episode of Inside Jeopardy! podcast, Jeopardy! producers Michael Davies and Sarah Foss said that the pop culture version isn’t going to be as easy as people think it is.

“A lot of people when we announced this said, ‘Finally a version of Jeopardy! I can actually play,” Michael said.

“Having said that, this is going to be on brand, Jeopardy! hard. In fact, the percentage of scores over a certain number on the pop culture test is exactly the same percentage we see on the regular test.”

“It is not going to be a cakewalk for anybody to get on the show, and (since it’s team-based) you got to beat six other people on other teams,” he went on.

“The competition on the buzzer, the competition deep in the categories, it’s pretty intense with that many people competing.”

Sarah said, “You think pop culture is a specific area but it’s testing knowledge in a new way.”

The producers also said that they are still casting for Season 1, which will be 27 episodes.

Pop Culture Jeopardy! will also be tournament-based and “celebrities and show alums” have also applied, according to the producers.

PLAY ON

Jeopardy! has been on ABC since its inception, but Pop Culture Jeopardy! will be the first to air on streaming services.

The overall gameplay will remain intact, but there are two big changes to the format of the game.

Instead of answering general knowledge questions, contestants will answer questions about pop culture subjects such as music, movies, sports, TV, and more.

And instead of three individual players competing against the players, the spinoff will have three teams of three players answering questions.

Michael, who hosts all the other versions of Jeopardy! will also serve as the executive producer of this spinoff.

MOVE OVER, KEN

A host has not yet been announced for Pop Culture Jeopardy!.

Ken Jennings hosts the syndicated version and the spinoffs on ABC, but no word on whether he will host the new show.

However, in June, a former Celebrity Jeopardy! contestant hinted that she might be a frontrunner for the hosting gig.

Katie Nolan, 37, a former ESPN host, podcaster, and the runner-up on Celebrity Jeopardy! 2023, talked about the possibility on What Is… A Jeopardy! Podcast.

“There has been some speculation online about you as the potential host for Pop Culture Jeopardy!,” podcast host Emily Heller asked Katie.

“Can you respond to those rumors at all?”

“I can’t,” she replied, getting a giant laugh from the interviewer, who sounded surprised.

“But I will say that I would love that, and that would be something I’d be interested in having a conversation about.”

“Whether or not I’ve had the conversation, I will just say I can’t respond,” Katie clarified.

“But I will say it was an honor to even be mentioned.

“I’m in the Jeopardy subreddit, and one day, I saw someone mention me, and I said, ‘That’s me! That’s sick!'” she said.

“No one knows what can ever happen. What’s meant to come to you will come to you.

“So we’ll just wait and see,” Katie finished.

A premiere date for the spinoff has not yet been announced.
