Reba McEntire has admitted that she used to find dressing up for events “frightening”.

The country star and actress has opened up about learning to stand up for herself while preparing for award shows with stylists and make-up artists.

“I was so uncomfortable and self-conscious,” Reba recalled. “I said, ‘Okay, from now on, never anything like that again.'”

The 69-year-old continued, “It took me a while to gain that confidence to stand up to a professional stylist, hair and make-up person and say, ‘That’s not me. I don’t like that.’ And they’d say, ‘Well, yeah, you just sit here and we’ll make sure you look just right.’ I said, ‘Well, make me look like me.'”

Reba told the outlet that while she found the process of getting ready for Hollywood events “frightening”, she had a number of style icons to look up to, including Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn.

“They’re very strong and they know exactly what they want,” The Voice coach said. “Those were my role models. Those were the women that I watched and learned and listened to and watched, learned from. They were my guide. They were my manual.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Reba explained that she wasn’t introduced to fashion and beauty until later in life.

“My mama was not into hair, make-up, looking a certain way. If she got us four kids dressed and out the door, that was a huge accomplishment,” she remembered. “If we got a brush through our hair, that was another big step. Get our teeth brushed, that was another big deal. So the niceties past that was not even a thought. It was just surviving.”
