Stephen Colbert Told Guest Drew Carey They Had ‘Beef’ After Being Publicly Embarrassed On Whose Line Is It Anyway
Highlights
Stephen Colbert and Drew Carey have a close friendship from their time working together on Whose Line Is It Anyway?
Colbert confronted Carey about a sketch where he had to rap, causing tension between them.
Colbert’s appearance on Whose Line Is It Anyway? was a big break for his career in the entertainment industry.
As ardent fans and viewers of Stephen Colbert and his late-night program The Late Show are already aware, the comedian once made several memorable guest appearances on the former ABC sketch comedy series Whose Line Is It Anyway?
On the show, a young Colbert famously showcased his quick wit and improvisational expertise alongside other comedians such as Wayne Brady, Colin Mochrie, and Ryan Stiles. The Price is Right host comedian Drew Carey, hosted the program consistently for eight seasons, and during that time and after, Colbert and Carey developed a close working and personal friendship.
While their performances on the show catapulted most of the cast members into the lofty careers in show business they have today; many viewers may not realize the amount of ‘tension’ behind the scenes, which was revealed by Colbert when he interviewed Drew Carey on his late-night show.
Stephen Colbert Confronted Drew Carey About A Beef He Had With Him On Whose Line Is It Anyway?
Stephen Colbert has had many memorable and famous guests on his Late Night Show. Arguably, one of the fans’ favorite guests has been Stephen’s former co-stars, such as those who appeared alongside him on Whose Line Is It Anyway?
Whose Line? host Drew Carey has frequently appeared on Late Night and has brought many hilarious moments and memories to the show. However, one particular incident shocked viewers at home and the studio audience, perhaps even more so than Stephen’s controversial interview with Jada Pinkett-Smith.
The moment occurred in October 2016, and after briefly talking about The Price is Right, Colbert abruptly confronted Drew Carey:
“I have a beef with you. A comedy beef with you.”
Drew Carey replied: “Really?”
Colbert then reminded the audience that Carey was the host of Whose Line Is It Anyway? for many seasons.
Colbert added that he was happy and honored when the show approached him to appear on the show way back in 2000.
Drew Carey tentatively interrupted him and said that he was great on the show, to which Stephen Colbert thanked him profusely.
Colbert then mentioned how he did a lot of improvisation when he lived in Chicago and that when he was cast on Whose Line? he told Carey and the producers that he would do anything but to please do not ask him to rap.
He then joked that, as a Caucasian man, he couldn’t do it successfully.
Drew Carey then said: “It was fun to watch.”
“It was agonizing for me to do, but yes, fun to watch.”
Colbert then relayed the defining moment that caused his heart to sink when Drew Carey announced the following sketch as rapping, and he had to get up with the rest of the cast and perform.
Drew Carey laughed alongside the audience but relayed that he had nothing to do with Colbert having to rap and that it was all to do with Dan Patterson and the rest of the Production crew for Whose Line Is It Anyway?
Colbert shook his head and joked that Carey needed to tell Patterson to “go to h*ll,” to which Drew Carey said that he would.
Stephen Colbert Was Once A Struggling Stand-Up Comedian Who Got His Big Break On Whose Line Is It Anyway?
Early in Stephen Colbert’s career, he focused on dramatic acting, which he majored in while attending college at Northwestern University.
However, sometime during his time there, Colbert ventured into comedy and improvisation, not knowing that both avenues would lead him to the successful career that he has today.
As he mentioned in his Late Night interview with Whose Line Is It Anyway host Drew Carey, Colbert began acting with the Northwestern improvisation team No Fun Mud Piranhas, where they performed before audiences in and around Chicago.
During this time, Colbert appeared to lean into his innate comedic and improvisational talents by taking additional college courses in comedy and improvisation.
After a considerable time with the No Fun Mud Piranhas, Stephen Colbert would later join the Second City Touring Company, working alongside other future big-name acts such as actor and comedian Steve Carell.
Colbert would later perform as a comedy trio with other comedians, wherein they developed shows for various major television corporations, such as HBO.
While Stephen Colbert found considerable success in these ventures, it was when — he once again mentioned to Drew Carey — he was cast as a guest star on Whose Line Is It Anyway? that he got his first big break in the entertainment industry.
Why Did Stephen Colbert Come In Last Place In Whose Line Is It Anyway Ranking?
As part of Whose Line Is It Anyway?, host Drew Carey would jokingly give out points to cast members based on their performances in specific sketches.
After a cast member won at the close of each episode, they would have to read out the credits on a teleprompter in a comedic way.
Years after Whose Line? aired its eight seasons, many fans wanted to know who had accumulated the most points during the show‘s original duration.
According to a 2017 report by BGR, the comedian, who ultimately, won the most points on Whose Line Is It Anyway? was Chip Esten with:
1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,041,000 points.
And Stephen Colbert ranked in a disappointing last place with:
21,000 points.
The list of most awarded points to least is as follows:
Chip Esten
Ryan Stiles
Colin Mochrie
Kathy Griffin
Wayne Brady
Greg Proops
Brad Sherwood
Denny Siegel
Karen Maruyama
Stephen Colbert
Stephen Colbert most likely came in last place because he was only featured in two episodes in the series, significantly fewer than the other cast members.
