Tom Felton gets teary-eyed while watching the opening scenes of Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone for the first time in 20 years
He is known for embracing his Harry Potter fame and creating hilarious wizard-themed videos for his dedicated fans, known as Potterheads.
And Tom Felton’s latest video has seen him watching the opening scenes of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone for the first time in nearly 20 years, encouraging fans to watch along with him.
But the actor, 33, who starred as Draco Malfoy in the eight-movie franchise, hardly managed to make it past the title sequence and theme tune before tearing up.
He explained to his fans that it was his first time watching Harry Potter in ‘about 20 years’ as he was overcome with emotion while returning to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone was originally published in 1997, before hitting screens in 2001.
The franchise went on to be a series of eight movies following off from seven books, with the second part of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows released in 2010.
As Tom prepared to click play and watch the first film in the franchise, he jokingly read out the movie description in case fans ‘hadn’t heard of’ the globally famous Harry Potter.
Explaining that the film was about an orphan discovering ‘the mystery of his parents’ deaths’, he pretended to mispronounce Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson’s names, adding that ‘they sound good’.
He then watched the first scene, where Harry Potter is left on the Dursley family’s doorstep, and immediately teared up before saying: ‘What? They are just leaving him on the doorstep?!’
The star desperately tried to hold it together as Albus Dumbledore bid farewell to Harry Potter before the magical title sequence rolled out for the first time.
Tom visibly became teary-eyed and put his head into his hands before saying ‘it’s mental’ as the famous opening music, called Hedwig’s Theme, rang out.
A young Daniel, now 31, then appeared on screen for the first time ever, playing the titular character of The Boy Who Lived.
While watching the moment, Tom said in disbelief: ‘God look at him! Radcliffe looks about five! Oh good lord!’
He adorably told himself to ‘keep it together’ as he couldn’t help but get emotional while watching his co-stars appear on his screen for the first time in nearly 20 years.
After watching the first 11 minutes and 11 seconds of the film with his fans, Tom added: ‘I’m just tearing up rather than giving you commentary but it will get better.
‘I think the best is yet to come in these movies! We’re definitely going to try this again.’
It is not the first time Tom has pleased fans with his love for Harry Potter, as he hosted a virtual reunion with the franchise’s biggest stars in November.
Hosting the ‘Home Party’ on YouTube, he marked 19 years since Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone aired, asking the movie’s cast: ‘What does 19 years later mean to you?’
Rupert, 32, who played Ron Weasley, revealed his nickname was ‘Go Again Grint’ as he would laugh so much on-set – especially during inappropriate moments.
Introducing the segment, Tom excitedly said: ‘One of the luckiest sods and smiley gits in the world.
‘I was lucky enough to pose this question to my old school chums, what does 19 years later mean to you?’
New dad Rupert, who welcomed his first child, a daughter Wednesday, with Georgia Groome in May, admitted it had been ‘an insane amount of time’ since the movies.
He recalled his first scene and how it felt very ‘overwhelming’ to step into the wizarding world nearly 20 years ago.
The flame-haired movie icon also gave a candid insight into life on-set, as he said: ‘I remember on Potter it would always be the most inappropriate scenes, like Dumbledore’s funeral was a particularly bad one…
‘For some reason I found that absolutely hilarious. Yeah, once you start laughing, it’s very hard to stop. I had a particularly bad reputation, they used to call me Go Again Grint because I could never do anything without doing it like 20 times.’
And Daniel said: ‘My first thoughts are that this is a mere preview of the nostalgia we’ll all be showing next year when it’s 20 years since the first film was released. I feel like we’ll be doing a lot of reminiscing in various forms.
‘It feels insane as I’m sure it does for anyone whose 30 or 31. It seems impossible that that time has past it feels very fresh. It’s been amazing to watch the whole thing continue to grow since it finished and not just the play and Fantastic Beasts.
‘New generations of people being introduced all the time. there are full grown adults who weren’t born when I was as cast!’
When asked how long it took him to realise the impact of the franchise, Daniel said: ‘It took a long time to realise how far reaching the Harry Potter world was…
‘From my childhood so a lot of people watch them at Christmas and it’s really cool.’
As well as hosting reunions, Tom also has a TikTok account where he responds to Harry Potter trends and goes out of his way to engage with his dedicated fans.
