Who is Shirley Henderson?

Shirley Henderson was born on November 24, 1965, in Kincardine, Fife, Scotland.

She is a multi-award-winning Scottish actress – and her list of TV and film credits is quite impressive.

At just 5ft tall, Shirley is known within the industry for her tiny frame and her raspy, squeaky, childlike voice.

As a child, she began singing in local clubs, at charity events, holiday camps and even a boxing contest.

At the age of 16, Henderson completed a one-year course at Adam Smith College, where she was awarded a National Certificate in Theatre Arts.

One year later, at just 17, she moved to London, where she spent three years at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, graduating in 1986.

She first appeared on screen in 1987 in the ITV children’s television drama Shadow Of The Stone – and she’s remained on screen ever since.

However, her most notable role came when she was cast in Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets (2002) and Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire (2005), as Moaning Mrytle.

Although many will know her from this role, what they may not know is she was the oldest actor to play a teenage Hogwarts student in the Harry Potter films.

She was 37 when she took on the role of teenager Myrtle.

Throughout her career, she has received two Scottish Baftas, a VFCC Award and an Olivier Award, as well as Bafta, Bifa, London Critics’ Circle, Chlotrudis, Gotham, and Canadian Screen Award nominations.

What TV shows has Shirley been on?

Henderson has appeared in countless TV shows since she first hit screens back in the 80s.

In her earlier years, she starred in Casualty, The Bill and Hamish Macbeth.

Since then, she has appeared in Doctor Who, Agatha Christie’s Marple: Murder Is Easy, Death In Paradise, and Southcliffe.

She appeared as Frances Drummond in the second season of Happy Valley and played Rose Marbury iin The ABC Murders.

In October 2022 she is starring in the Channel 5 psychological thriller, The House Across The Street, which was previously titled The Winter Child.

Henderson is set to play Claudia – a reclusive woman who becomes increasingly obsessed with the case of a missing child who lived nearby.

As well as TV she’s starred in films including the Bridget Jones franchise as Jude.

Other roles include Lindsay in 24 Hour Party People and Lucille Hardy in Stan & Ollie.
