The Voice: Reba McEntire cries during rehearsal as singers deliver emotional rendition of You Say on NBC show
Reba McEntire cried during rehearsal after emotional performances by two of her singer’s on Monday’s episode of The Voice on NBC.
The 68-year-old new coach was moved by her singers Alison Albrecht, 23, and Angelina Nazarian, 18, both of Michigan, as they practiced their Battle duet of You Say by Lauren Daigle.
‘When you are singing this song, it’s very humbling. It’s baring your soul,’ Reba told Alison and Angelina as she explained the importance of bringing emotion.
Alison and Angelina then delivered the song again and Reba wiped away tears listening to them.
‘By the time they finished, I was bawling,’ Reba said with wet eyes. ‘That’s the kind of reaction you want from an audience.’
‘If you can can touch someone’s heart the way you just touched mine, you’ve done something terrific,’ Reba told Alison and Angelina.
Alison and Angelina during their matchup in the Battle Round failed to bring the emotion that they brought in rehearsal.
Irish singer Niall Horan, 30, said their performance was ‘special’ and leaned toward Alison as the winner.
Gwen Stefani, 54, also said she was favoring Alison as the winner.
‘That was so powerful,’ said John Legend, 44. ‘The lyrics of that song are just so meaningful and I felt like both of you embodied that through your performance, so, I thought that was really beautiful and touching.’
‘Emotion, to me, means a lot,’ Reba told them. ‘You did that in rehearsals. You were still, you were meaningful. You saw what it did to me, I was crying. Today, you went back to the way you did it the first time.’
‘I know you’re a little nervous. You’re both great vocalists and I’m very proud of you. I’d say because of the emotion, the winner is Alison,’ she added.
Alison, who was 17 when the Blind Audition and Battle rounds were recorded, advanced to the Knockouts round with the win.
The two-hour show opened with Gwen’s singer Bias and Jacquie Roar performing a Battle duet to Need A Favor by Jelly Roll.
Gwen named Bias as the winner, but Reba used a Steal to nab country singer Jacquie for her team.
Niall paired his teenage singers Julia Roome, 13, of New York, and Olivia Eden, 15, of New Jersey, against each other.
The performed a duet to Kiss Me by Sixpence None the Richer and Niall afterward declared that Julia was the winner.
John matched Stee against Willie Gomez for a duet of Tacones Rojos.
Stee was named the winner after their energetic duet.
Gwen tasked her singers Kristen Brown and Juliette Ojeda with singing a duet of the Celine Dion song That’s The Way It Is.
Kristen was named the winner of the battle.
Reba matched her singers Ms. Monet and CORii against each other and they performed a duet of the Pattie LaBelle song New Attitude.
Ms. Monet was declared the winner, but both Gwen and Niall pushed their buttons to steal CORii.
‘You’ve got so much charisma. How do you tame it just a little bit so that you can be that much cooler and that much more you? I want to work with that,’ Gwen told her.
CORii was swayed and picked Gwen to be her coach.
‘Gwen Stefani is turning out to be very, very hard to pitch against,’ Niall said.
‘Good luck, CORii. Can’t help you now,’ he added with a laugh.
The Voice will return on Tuesday on NBC.
