Timberlake has been experiencing heightened scrutiny and backlash following Britney Spears’ memoir.

Following the backlash Justin Timberlake faced after Britney Spears’ memoir The Woman in Me exposed his alleged mistreatment towards her during their relationship, the singer is now experiencing criticism for how he’s treating another female in the industry – Dakota Johnson.

The duo appeared on the Saturday, January 27 episode of Saturday Night Live together. Dakota was hosting, while Justin was appearing as the musical guest. However, during their opening monologue, many viewers found Timberlake’s comment towards Johnson belittling rather than humorous.

Fans Thought Justin Was Rude To Dakota During Their ‘SNL’ Stint

Though Dakota stared the monologue by herself, Justin popped up half-way through with a pre-written comment about how he’s a veteran at hosting SNL.

“I have hosted before,” he told the audience, while holding up five fingers and mouthing the words “five times.”

“Ya, well that was 10 years ago,” Dakota snapped back.. “Either way I’m so happy you chose my show for your comeback.”

To this, Justin quipped, “Comeback – is that what we’re calling it?” Dakota was quick to clarify she meant it in a positive light (though it could’ve been taken as a reference to Timberlake’s damaged reputation following Spears’ memoir.” “Ya, I mean comeback in a good way,” Dakota said.

Justin replied, “Oh okay I see what this is, this is a joke like first he was bringing s— back and now has bringing coming back.”

Though SNL is known for being scripted, some fans couldn’t help but voice criticism for Timberlake’s opening appearance, which some found to be rude, especially to Johson.

“The way Justin Timberlake just HAD to appear during Dakota Johnson’s monologue on SNL to take attention away & remind everyone that he’s hosted 5x is so typical of him,” one person wrote, OK! Magazine points out. “Always has to make everything about himself to try & overshadow a woman. He hasn’t changed & never will. What a weak little self-centered misogynistic man.”

Similarly, another critic wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Justin Timberlake coming out to ‘crash’ Dakota Johnson’s monologue on SNL just cements why I dislike him.”

They continued, “Like where is the self-awareness to bow out of a skit where you try and overshadow the female host, knowing damn well you have past allegations of being super misogynistic.”

Timberlake has been experiencing heightened criticism since Spears’ memoir hit shelves last fall. In the book, she makes a lot of revelations about their relationship, which took place two decades ago, including accusing Justin of being unfaithful and pressuring her into having an abortion. The pair dated for approximately three years, from 1999 to 2002.

More recently, Britney Spears fans got the best of Timberlake when they made her old single “Selfish” resurface in the top charts after he released a new single of the same name.

Even more, there have been reports that the backlash against Justin has taken a toll in his marriage to Jessica Biel. The pair have been married for nine years. They welcomed their first son, Silas, in 2015, and their second son, Phineas, in 2020.
