Jeopardy! fans accuse show of ‘unambiguously wrong’ clue and are ‘still annoyed about it’

JEOPARDY! has been accused of allowing a wrong answer to slip through the cracks.

Fans of the game show are still annoyed over them allowing Drew Basile to give the incorrect answer and get money for it.

During Double Jeopardy! on June 25, Drew, picked the category “Kingdom.”

The whole category had been picked except for the $400 question.

“The United Kingdom was created by uniting these two kingdoms,” the question read.

Drew buzzed in and answered, “What is England and Scotland?”

“Right,” host Ken Jennings told him.

Drew got the $400 for the question, pushing him even further into the lead.

He also answered the next question correctly and wound up with $11,800 by the end of the round.

He played against Staci Garner and Alan Elverum.

‘THAT’S INCORRECT’

Reddit users discussed the game and said that technically Drew’s answer was wrong.

“The clue was ‘The United Kingdom was created by uniting these 2 kingdoms.’ Technically, the correct response should have been Great Britain and Ireland,” one fan wrote.

Jeopardy! champ Drew Basile boasts he ‘knew the answer’ to clue that ended his streak and reveals real reason he lost
“Also it was an incorrect question, not answer,” another said.

“The United Kingdom was formed nearly 100 years later in 1801 when Great Britain united with the Kingdom of Ireland,” added a third.

“Yea I don’t know how Ireland got left out of that clue,” said another.

“This is correct and I’m still annoyed about it. It didn’t affect the outcome of the game but it was unambiguously the wrong answer,” another wrote.

Jeopardy! Host Timeline

Jeopardy! has had a tumultuous history regarding hosts after the death of the iconic Alex Trebek in 2020. Here are all of the hosts since the game show’s inception in 1964.

Art Fleming – 1964 to 1975, he was the original host of the daytime version of Jeopardy! on NBC.

Alex Trebek – 1984 to 2020, the late, great Alex hosted Jeopardy!’s modern iteration for 36 years until his death from pancreatic cancer.

Guest hosts – 2020 to 2021, Jeopardy! tested out a series of guest hosts for week or two-week stints, including Anderson Cooper, LaVar Burton, and Aaron Rodgers.

Mike Richards – 2021, he was named host for one week before resigning amid controversy. He was the show’s executive producer at the time.

Mayim Bialik – 2021 to 2023, when Mike was announced as the show’s new host, Mayim was chosen to host tournaments and primetime specials.

Mayim and Ken Jennings – 2022 to 2023, 74-time champion Ken (the longest-winning contestant ever) joined Mayim as a guest host and they split hosting duties.

Ken Jennings – 2023 to present. Last December, Mayim announced on Instagram that she would “no longer” host Jeopardy! after a lengthy hiatus, having stood with the writer’s strike, and Ken was named sole host.

Ken now helms all editions of Jeopardy! including Celebrity Jeopardy!, the nightly show, and other primetime specials like Masters.

“Good thing the incorrect $400 Kingdoms clue didn’t affect the game. The kingdoms of England and Scotland were joined into the Kingdom of Great Britain nearly a century before the United Kingdom was formed,” one last fan said.

GET A CLUE!

Drew’s winning streak ended on June 28 and a producer revealed what he did wrong.

On Monday’s new episode of the podcast, Inside Jeopardy!, producers Sarah Whitcomb Foss and Buzzy Cohen discussed Drew and Adriana Harmeyer’s game statistics.

Sarah and Buzzy talked about what Drew needs to work on the most as he prepares for the Tournament of Champions.

“One stat that isn’t quite as great for Drew is Final Jeopardy,” Sarah said.

“Obviously, with so many runaways, he didn’t need it very much but he was only three for eight so about 38 percent [of correct FJ responses].

“[So] when you compare that to Adriana, who was 13 for 16 [of correct Final Jeopardy guesses], probably something Drew is gonna work on before ToC I’m guessing.”

Adriana has an impressive 15-day winning streak.

Buzzy said that Final Jeopardy! is something that a contestant has to work on and get better at because it is written differently than the other clues.
