Chance the Rapper returns with four new songs, buys local news site Chicagoist
Life is good for Chance the Rapper, who started July by proposing to longtime girlfriend Kirsten Corley on the 4th and shared four surprise songs Thursday, his first new solo music since 2016’s “Coloring Book.”
There’s “I Might Need Security,” built around a catchy-yet-radio unfriendly sample of Jamie Foxx singing the f-bomb; the playful summertime banger “Wala Cam” featuring Chance’s Chicago rapper brethren Supa Bwe; “Work Out,” a sung-rapped motivational speech with vocals from Chance collaborator Francis and the Lights that sounds like a “Coloring Book” outtake; and the nostalgic “65th & Ingleside,” about his rise from his Chicago roots, name-dropping Donald Glover to thank him for taking him on his 2012 Childish Gambino tour.
Chance also announces on “I Might Need Security” that he purchased the local Chicago news and culture site Chicagoist, which was shut down last year along with sister sites including Gothamist and DNAinfo after its staffers battled to unionize. Gothamist confirmed the news that Chance’s Social Media LLC bought the site from New York Public Radio’s WNYC, which acquired the “-ist” brands earlier this year.
“I bought the Chicagoist just to run you racist (expletives) outta business,” he raps on the song, sharing an official statement about the acquisition with USA TODAY.
“I’m extremely excited to be continuing the work of the Chicagoist, an integral local platform for Chicago news, events and entertainment,” he says in the statement. “I look forward to re-launching it and bringing the people of Chicago an independent media outlet focused on amplifying diverse voices and content.”
