The Voice: John Legend gets moved to the verge of tears after finale performance by his singer Bryan Olesen of ballad Beautiful Things
John Legend got emotional after his singer Bryan Olesen performed a ballad on Monday’s episode of The Voice that featured this season’s five finalists.
The 45-year-old Grammy-winning singer was asked by host Carson Daly, 50, for his thoughts after Bryan, 50, delivered a heartfelt rendition of the 2024 song Beautiful Things by Benson Boone.
‘You know, I was so moved by it because it feels like when you’re singing that you know what it means to lose something,’ John said with his voice cracking with emotion.
‘And I felt that,’ John added on the verge of tears. ‘I really felt it. I really felt it.’
‘Thank you,’ Bryan said as John nodded while still chock-full of emotion.
The two-night season 25 live finale opened on Monday with Carson informing the audience that each of the five finalists was going to sing twice during the two-hour episode with a ballad and up-tempo song.
John’s singer Nathan Chester, 28, of Chicago, was the first to perform and delighted the audience with his version of It’s Your Thing by The Isley Brothers.
Next up was Josh Sanders, 36, of Kannapolis, North Carolina, who represented his coach Reba McEntire, 69, and performed the 1995 Vince Gill song Go Rest High on That Mountain.
Reba’s other finalist Asher HaVon, 32, from Selma, Alabama, took the stage next and performed the Donna Summer song Let’s Dance.
Asher before his performance said that Reba has ‘truly become a second mother’ to him and praised her for creating a ‘safe environment’ for him to succeed.
John told Asher after his performance that he truly believed that he was ‘the best vocalist in this competition.
‘And I really felt like this song was perfect. I really feel like maybe this is a lane that you should consider, this disco dance,’ John added.
Bryan then performed Beautiful Things and emotionally moved his coach John, who has been supportive of Bryan throughout season 25.
Karen Waldrup, 37, performed next as the only finalist representing new coaches Dan + Shay.
The Louisiana native for her ballad sang the Rascal Flatts version of the country song What Hurts The Most.
Josh returned for his up-tempo song and showed his fun side taking on the Randy Houser song Boots On.
The finalists also shared personal ‘Dear Music’ letters that documented the role music has played in their lives.
Nathan in his letter said music taught him how to move, not just doing the splits, but also how to ‘move in life’. He wrote that he unsuccessfully auditioned during season two, but tried again years later and ‘John Legend is like family now’.
He was surprised by the love of his life Emily who said she loved his letter.
Nathan for his ballad then mesmerized the audience with his rendition of A Song For You by Ray Charles.
Keith Urban, 56, who served as mega mentor on season 25, returned and performed his new song Messed Up As Me.
The U.S. Army Field Band also performed the song Brother by the rock band Needtobreathe.
Bryan for his up-temp song belted out the George Michael hit song ‘Freedom! ’90’ decked out in a silver suit.
The mohawked singer was joined by backup dancers and showed off his own moves while performing.
John afterward gushed about his rendition.
‘I loved it, I loved it! It was just so exuberant. It just felt so good. I felt your passion, the energy with the background singers, the chorus, the energy of the dancers, everything. I loved seeing you do your little shimmies up there, too. Everything worked, man. It was such a great performance. Such a great finale,’ John said.
Karen was the penultimate singer of the episode and performed I’m Alright by Jo Dee Messina.
Asher ended the show with another top-notch performance as he took on the ballad I Will Always Love You, which was originally recorded by Dolly Parton and later famously covered by Whitney Houston.
Chance The Rapper, 31, did not have a singer in the finale, but Carson asked him for his thoughts on Asher’s performance.
‘Man, you deserve to win this show. This show is about your voice. I got to say, you’re the best vocalist on the show every performance, every week. There has not been a week so far where I don’t think you were the best performer,’ Chance said.
Chance told Asher he’s been the best person since the Blind Auditions and urged viewers to vote for him.
‘You made me a very proud mama. Love you with all my heart. And for you to get up there and sing like you did using your god-gifted talent that god was so sweet to give you makes me so proud and happy. You’re so regal when you’re singing, and you carry it so well. So proud. Way to go,’ Reba said.
The Voice will return on Tuesday with the results of viewer voting and a winner will be crowned.
