‘The Price Is Right’s Drew Carey Gets Candid About Ongoing Struggles With Mental Illness, Says Past Suicide Attempts Were “Calls For Help”
The Price is Right host Drew Carey recently opened up to Chris Wallace about his years-long struggle with mental illness.
During a recent appearance on Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace, Carey got candid about dealing with depression as a young man and revealed he had attempted suicide twice, once at 18 and again in his early 20s.
“I think the suicide attempts were calls for help,” he said. Carey revealed that the first attempt happened during a fraternity party, recalling, “I was so mad that everybody was having a good time. I remember that. I remember walking down the stairs and everybody’s drinking and I was like, ‘What the hell are they so happy about?’”
He continued, “I was just angry that they were so happy. I was just tired of my life and [thought], who’s gonna miss me?”
The game show host added that those feelings still sometimes occur, even after he found more “purpose” in comedy and attending a Marine boot camp.
“I have a lot of that still. Like, the who’s-gonna-miss-me type of thing. A lot of times I think to myself, like, if I die, I’m just gonna have my body cremated,” he said. “No funeral and anything associated with, like, all my mementos and stuff. You can just burn them and give them away. Like, who cares?”

The comedian later admitted that he still struggles with depression, “just like everyone else.”
“But it’s not as bad. I mean, just because you’re a celebrity and you have money doesn’t mean bad things don’t happen to you or you don’t have bad days. Everybody’s a person,” he said.
Carey has been hosting The Price is Right since 2007 when Bob Barker announced his retirement. But the former movie star and comedian maintains that fame has not “spoiled” him.
“I’d like to say no. But it’s changed a lot of things for me,” he told Wallace. “Like, don’t take things personally. I took everything personally, if somebody wrote a bad review, I’d be like, what the hell? Coming after my money? You know, so yeah, that’s — all that’s gone.”
Instead, Carey cracked a joke that he often makes on The Price is Right, saying, “I’m a regular guy from Cleveland. My girlfriend ties me to the bed one leg at a time, just like everyone else.”
